Eating During The First Trimester

Fact: One of the reasons I created this blog was because during my first trimester when I’d read other “mom blogs” that would stress the importance of whole grains and vegetables I wanted to throw something at the computer.

Eating during pregnancy is important. You want to fuel your body with the right nutrients for you and the baby but one thing is for sure – when you’re so nauseous you can’t stand straight you don’t want to eat broccoli!! My philosophy was to eat whatever it was I craved during that time. Come my second trimester I basically enjoyed all the same foods I did pre-pregnancy so I played catch-up then. In order to get some nutrients into my body for the 1st trimester I basically tricked myself as if I were a child.
Every morning, as I did before pregnancy, I’d have a Green’s First juice. This stuff tastes pretty good and it loads you up with a days worth of veggies in one drink. I cut my usual full serving into half a serving because it was all I could stomach and felt good knowing I was getting some greens my body.

Pizza. I ate a lot of pizza during the 1st trimester. So on that pizza I would add vegetables and protein. Much more tolerable than steamed broccoli.

Avocados Thankfully I still loved avocados and since I knew those were a pregnancy superfood I just ate as many as possible. I probably had about one a day and didn’t stress about the extra fat in them. I also often put them on pizza (that’s multitasking, right?)

Eggs. Eggs are another pregnancy superfood though they say you have to eat the yolks. I’ve never been a big fan of yolks so when I made my eggs at home I’d do egg whites and either let one egg’s yolk be in it or I wouldn’t fish out any yolk that happened to fall in. At restaurants I’d just go ahead and order whatever egg dish as is. Yolk and all. The plus side to this was I never had to pay for the egg white up-charge!

SOUP. Pre-pregnancy it was rare to get me to eat soup but during pregnancy it felt like the most replenishing thing I could put in my body. I would INHALE it it felt so good. The nice thing about soups is they can have lots of veggies and protein to them so that was the other way I tricked myself into the required vegetables.

And of course supplements. My doctor had me on a prenatal vitamin but I also have a naturopath who had me on a few other things to keep me and baby in our best form. Be sure to check with your doctor to find what works for you. There have been a lot of studies recently on choline and probiotics being really great for your babies development.

During my 1st trimester I also craved fruit all the time. Especially oranges. I’d buy a bag of those little ones from whole foods and just demolish a bunch in a row. It was really cool to find out a few weeks later how vital vitamin C is during the first trimester. My body instinctively knew what it needed and craved it. Very cool. So trust what you’re craving. Even if it is a brownie sundae:)
