First Few Weeks Essentials
Outer
There were a few items that friends told me about before Indy came along that I absolutely needed and a few we learned along the way. Here is a list of stuff we found invaluable with a new baby at home!:
Kimono shirts: A friend gave these to me and assured me they would get good use. By golly did they ever! Indy LIVED in these. The second he started to outgrow them we even bought the next size up. Why are they so awesome? When baby comes home from the hospital and they are so cute and precious and FRAGILE with all those soft spots on their head, the idea of putting something over their head is TERRIFYING. Truly. When you go to do it you get so nervous. The kimono shirts can be put on and taken off so easily and effortlessly.
Arm and Hammer bags: These are essentially doggy poop bags for your baby but the scent contains their diaper smell. These are perfect for when you take baby out and about and #2 happens.
Sleep Nightgowns: We had a boy so the idea of a nightgown seemed a bit silly at first but this one is simple: for middle of the night changes you hike it up, change the diaper and hike it back down. No half asleep buttoning, snapping or zippering!
Swaddle Me Swaddles: Every baby seems to enjoy a different form of the beloved swaddle. Indy loved these and slept the best in them. There comes a point the cloth swaddles become too small plus baby can get out of them easily. These have velcro that keeps baby snug as a bug with no loose fabric by their face. Very cute designs too.
Brestfriend: They try and teach you to breast feed at the hospital with a bunch of pillows that just fall over the place. Having a breastfeeding pillow that gives baby a sturdy place to lay and feed is a game changer. When we came home from the hospital and used this he was able to latch so comfortably and easily. There are other brands that make ones similar, we have this and love it.
Medicine box*: The kimono shirt friend also made me a medicine box to have on hand. This was great because anytime something was wrong with Indy I could go “Let me go consult the box!” and I’d often find the solution. Here’s what mine had (plus a few I added!):
- Baby thermometer
- Nail clippers (though grab a file too – it’s easier and all you need to do in the beginning)
- Milkscreen (detects if their is alcohol in your breastmilk so you can safely have a glass of wine!)
- Neil Med PediaMist (saline nose spray for babies)
- NoseFrida (to get the snot out!)
- Windi (similar to NoseFrida but for poop!)
- Vitamin D drops
- Infant Tylenol (in case a fever strikes)
- Mucus and Cough syrup
- Probiotics (keeps their tummies and digestion happy)
- Diaper Rash Cream
- Aquaphor Baby (great for any excema patches and rashes they may pop up)
- Gas drops
These are the few things that come to mind that we couldn’t live with out! What are yours?
