When I first became pregnant I was obsessed with completely cleaning up my beauty routine. It didn’t seem to be enough that the majority of things I used were already non-toxic and that I was pretty sure everything was paraben free. No, I went to the extreme. All natural face care, hair care, makeup you name it. I did this for about 2 weeks. Guess what happened? I had limp hair, my skin was breaking out and quite honestly I just felt like sh*t. It wasn’t bad enough that my first trimester had me feeling like I was hungover on a boat all day – I was looking like I had been hungover on a boat all day. That’s when I began to reel it in. Okay, what is exactly in all of these products I was using before? Are they harmful to baby? The answer for nearly everything was “no”. Sure I had to stop using my Shani Darden retinol reform (which I had known from the beginning) but the balancing moisturizer and sunscreens she had me on? Why sacrifice those paraban free and highly effective products for some all-natural thing that was making my skin look terrible. Seriously, what’s the point of skincare if it doesn’t work for you? Most of my makeup was non-toxic and/or natural but foundations are best when they aren’t the all natural. The best one I’ve found that is is by w3ll people and I do use it every so often but otherwise? I stick with Laura Mercier or Bobbi Brown. Both who have great products that aren’t harmful to baby. If you want to go all natural and that feels great to you by all means DO IT! But all I’m saying is, I found for myself there was no need to go to extremes. I could make sure my baby was taking care of while still looking fabulous and feeling like a woman. Even when I was stuffing my face with pizza to calm the all the nausea.

A few of my favorite non-toxic brands/products:

Beauty Counter has great blushes, bronzers and brushes.

Honest Beauty makes a great eyeliner and I hear their lip color in “Mulberry Kiss” is fantastic.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s line at Juice Beauty makes a wonderful Illuminating Primer, fabulous lip sticks/crayons/glosses and it’s the best all-natural mascara I’ve found.

Tata Harper’s Volumizing Lip & Cheek Tint is just dreamy.
